Que sera, sera etc. A few stolen moments in the golden sunshine with the Beagles on the trails near Islands Lake, near Mildmay, and Kincardine as well, and the remainder of the summer has passed me right on by.

Images of a lot of rainy days, everything sodden and my poor flowers with heads hanging and dripping, hot bright sunshine on my nephew's wedding day, during which all the bald guys got fried, adjusting to a new job, new co-workers and making new friends; definitely a summer of transition.

Our son bought his first home, our other son began college, another transition to experience!

Hopefully there hasn't been too much change in the World, except for the looming elections on both sides of the Border.

A wonderful long distance friend came for a flying visit, and is much missed, hope it can happen again when there is more time for both of us.

Autumn is here, the leaves are changing colors, birds have flocked and swooped, soon the snow will be here again.

I'm always hopeful that with the change of the seasons will come an easing of the workloads and stress. My nephew who works for Hockey Canada, arranged for the cup to visit the East Garafraxa Township garage for a photo op with the latest equipment purchase and personnel, a Volvo grader they got last fall. En route, they arranged for some school visits, and began the day at our farm, in a teeming April Shower. We all got soaked, have colds (and could care less) and loved every drippy second of the whole thing!

Sorry about your shoes, Phil, but farms will be farms, especially in a Canadian Spring. Our son called in to work and let them know he'd be late as the Stanley Cup was coming to our place- of course, they laughed at him and hung up. But, he had the pictures to take with him for proof, so now he's a minor Idol at the office.

A few clicks at the insta print machine at Wal-Mart, and we were instantly famous. This morning I was awakened by the deafening cackling of a flock of starlings busily picking and bickering around the house. Which means that eventually, despite the smoke still rising, one of these brainiacs will be trying to creat a nest in the top of our chimney.

The cat will pace and yowl, alerted to the plight of the bird who has fallen into the small pipe, thrashing and pecking and trying to escape the sooty death until it suffocates itself. And, when the noise has ceased and the screen on the chimney cover has been repaired, and the cat is assured there's really nothing there at all...we'll clean out the chimney and hope another misguided feathered friend will also attempt the futile task of building nests in the chimney.

There are April showers on the way, but for now, the sun is shining, the Red-Winged Blackbirds are trilling and mating, and my feeder remains a happening place.

The cats are posted on the window sill, watching all the bird porn going on, in living color. Energy efficient Cat TV! Entertainment for the dogs as they bask, when one of the cats are overwhelmed by temptation hopping just beyond the glass, and whacks its head trying to get through the invisible barrier.

You can almost hear the chuckles...birdy and canine!

Spring, 2008, Goodbye Snow!

Sooooo...Here we are at last! Spring has arrived for 2008, and with it the arrival of the migrating birds, the appearance of the mud boils in our country roads, and the longer lasting daylight hours. My road has all but dissolved into a mass of open muddy pits, which I navigate to and from work with great trepidition for the health of my wee car. You'd think with all the available technology in the world today, someone would come up with a cure for bad roads!
But then, we're still teaching people to wash their hands to prevent the spread of preventable diseases that continue to plague our health care facilities. Can't seem to get the basics looked after by the general populace, so why do I think potholes can be prevented??? Because I'm an Optimist. Pity me. This has been one of the toughtest winters of my life so far, for the winter blues. I lost my Dad this February 22nd, despite excellent teamwork and diligence shown by his medical team. Some things are just destined to be. He went down trying to the bitter end, for which I will always commend him. Consequently, my Mom is learning for the first time, to be alone, and all the responsiblities that come with being a sole home owner, something alien and new to her, as my Dad was always the detail person. She's doing great! We are all very proud of her. Her next hurdle is in coping with the inevitable demise of another sister and brother in law, as they are both battling illness and disease simultaneously. My heart goes out to my cousins who face the loss of a Mother and Father in the near future.
But for now, one day at a time for me. I'm just happy that another winter will soon be behind us, the snow is melting without filling my basement (so far), birds are singing each morning despite the threat of spring snowstorms and freezing rain, and are once again visiting my feeder- was my first winter without birds! They all left me, a harbinger of the difficult weather we endured.
Today, I begin the next phase of my "calling", having given up my full time position in the retirement home, to take a part time position in a nursing home, bringing Life to those who cannot find it on their own. No longer a Nurse, no longer working Night shift, home each evening with my Hubby, each morning with my Pets, planning fun and games for all of those who drift through the days in a haze of pain and confusion. It will take all of my patience and skills to gently remind these who are living out finality, that they are indeed still alive, still human and still can feel the joy of a good laugh and a positive influence. I know I will make a lot of friends, only to lose them to the diseases of Aging. But along the way, I hope to show them a damned good time!!!
I'll leave my family someday, with the knowledge that Mom made a difference to the World. Just like my Dad before me.

Holly's Sweater, and Dexter The Demonic

ON the Needles...Holly's sweater, in worsted weight, a 2X2 rib with a peplum skirt. My own design, I measured each dog to assist with fitting, using a rib pattern to allow for weight gain, as aging Beagles blossom! Big sister Sarah, a doberman cross, prefers the rasp of snow across her ruff, and found that a jacket merely irritated her more sensitive skin. We recently started adoption procedures for her from a local SPCA. She has quickly adjusted to our home, having big sisters and learning the ways of a good pet. Not house-trained, she is doing well, and only has infrequent accidents now! She has learned to sit, sit-pretty, lie down and "off", and she sits to greet people. Not bad for being a family member for a mere 6 days!
Severely emaciated from roaming loose, this former kennel Fuzzy needed a home to make sure she was warm, dry, fed, safe and loved. As soon as I saw her, I knew we could be the right home. She is slowly gaining weight, despite coming into heat, brought on by being warm and fed regularly! Soon, she will go to be spayed, and once her system heals and settles down, the real joy of being a Pet can commence!
Her teeth are cleaner, her coat is shiny, her eyes are brighter, and she loves to laze in my lap and watch TV. Her favorite of all is when I put on the video "Milo and Otis", and she tries to interact with the characters on the big screen, to the entertainment of her sisters, Bonnie and Sarah.
I used my Christmas bonus from work to put towards adopting a dog who needed us. I think, whenever someone does us a good deed, we are duty bound to pay it forward!
There's my New Year's Challenge to you all...for 2008, find a way to pay your good fortune forward! Then, off to the Burlington Convention Center, for the traditional and colorful Hindu ceremony to finalize these festivities. Right beside the door, in plain sight of 2 dogs and 2 cats as well as assorted people?
Hmmm.
I nudged the dish carefully with the toe of my sneaker. The wee mousie blinked sleepily at me, stretched, yawned, and then began to come awake.
I snatched up the dish, dumped the critter onto the floor, whacked it soundly with the dish, scooped it up and flew out to the barn where I gracefully flung It into the manure pile. In about 20 seconds or less.
When I returned to the house, the cats were still asleep, each stretched out on a dog bed, the dogs were sleeping on the floor in a weak sunbeam, none the wiser for my Adventure in Pest Control.
I have duct taped over the hole in the screen, and will again reiterate to my darling husband, the importance of the plexiglass that we have always kept on the lower half of our patio screen, both for critter-proofing and dog scratch prevention.
Oh, and yes, I did take the picture, knowing full well, he'd never believe the "mouse sleeping in the dog dish" story. Now its a "In Your Face" moment!
Just another day in the Life...

Labor Day Weekend Runaways

So, here we are, on vacation for a whole weekend in lovely upstate New York, at Letchworth State Park. Really pretty, it was very generous of the owner to bequeath the property to the State for all to share. Only a couple of hours from home really, its a place we'll certainly visit again. The upkeep of this miniature Grand Canyon is phenomenal, all the stone steps and parapet walls to maintain, while errant humans swarm all over forbidden river areas and leave so much detritus behind despite the warnings to taking it back out with you. We saw Bald Eagles and many, many turkey Vultures swooping and soaring in the late summer sun. Ages old trees, willows, sycamores, walnuts, chestnuts and oaks grace the scenic canyon, spreading wild nuts for the many chipmunks and squirrels to feast on and hide away for winter.
I suffer from Vertigo, so walking along the cliff sides was a challenge for me, observing my hubby leaning far out to get the best view, knowing that the sheer drop and uncertainty of the Shale canyon walls could mean disaster were a trial. The Canyon was old, but crumbling, a point often pointed out to me as we descended the stone step trails to the waterfalls, by the very person who then became affronted and scoffed at my concern as he challenged gravity, belly first. But, try to explain vertigo to someone who has never felt the pull of gravity when confronted with such a cliff. Well, may as well spit into the wind.
So, clinging resolutely to a large solid tree some several feet back from the sheer precipice, I duly answered, "yes Dear, really amazing" as he gave running commentary on the dangerous locations and lack of solidity beneath the trails as we hiked along.
The following day, when touring from the opposite side of the canyon and visiting the official Dam site and viewing the historical disaster films which caused the dam to be created...one became a little more aware of how precarious the trails actually were, when one had a bird's eye view of the lack of solidity underneath where one had casually been strolling only a few hours before. I noticed a "wow, look at that, where we were standing, that's really thin..." before the awareness of his proximity to being "TOLD" kicked in and his voice tapered off. Quickly changing the subject, we wandered on, then headed for home, our runaway time near its end.
Still, all the photos, and the over-eating that go with a usual vacation were accomplished with gusto! Despite having only a few hours, a mere 2 day window of escapism to play with!
And then there we were, back home to resume work, chores and everyday life, hoping and dreaming of yet another runaway weekend to come, sooner rather than later I hope! Yes, I survived watching his antics, and he nver did get his lecture, well deserved as it may have been. But then, I pay his Life Insurance. So, Carry on Dear...I'll wait.
:)

Summer Splendor Ablaze

Well, its been over a month since my last posting on here. Summer has slipped by in a warm haze for me, for the most part. I've been embroiled in an endless cycle of work, and chores, and more work, and have done very little of great interest to me! Here I am, having scored an unexpected day off and all I can do is try to catch up with my very sadly neglected home chores. Well, at least my Fun and Friendship group has gone well this summer. The Ladies are a lot of fun to watch as they struggle against time and dementia, having fun and trying so hard to get my approval of the efforts shown. They have done well, tackling each game as if it were of major importance! I know its been a lifeline for some, a distraction for others and perhaps been encouraging as well as fun. At least I hope it has!

Tonight there's a benefit concert for Katie's Malawi Kenya trip, and a CD release for Jamie's band that he has put so much of himself into. Its at Broadway Musical and features some up and comers in the area, young people with musical aspirations having an opportunity to play for the first audience!

Hopefully the CD will sell well, and the tees, and that the stage fright won't overcome fragile digestive tracts, and that the doting parents will remember ear plugs too! 'With Conviction" has been working hard since the summer tour down east, putting together some original tracks into the next CD due out soon. The CDs can be ordered on the web page, www.myspace.com/withconviction just leave a message for Mike, who will arrange it for you! The proceeds for tonight will be funding a university grad trip, to build a school along with Habitat for Humanity, in Melawi, Kenya. These graduating fledgling teachers are working towards a good cause, and anyone wishing to support them can contact me for contact info (thanks in advance).

This summer season has been sooooo dry, the gardens, usually lush and bright have really accelerated into September, with the drought having forced them to fight for survival. We have only had to cut our grass a total of 8 times in 3 months. Good gas milage for the lawn tractor I know, but, I do love the smell of fresh cut grass. Hopefully I'll be able to score some more regular time to devote to my home, both indoors and out. There seems no end to the people who need our help as care givers this year, and my company has never been busier. However, working straight through the weeks past, with only a few days of recharge time in the past months, has taken a toll, and I find myself getting overwhelmed in the work that needs attending here for my family and farm. I'm looking forward to a slight lull in the demand, to give me time to regroup and gather myself for the next rush! My other co-workers are in the same boat, rushed and getting grumpy!

Hopefully the summer hasn't sped past everyone! Time flies, and it really wasn't even that much fun!
My poor Tiger Lilies were a little more spindly than usual due to the severity of this season's drought, but the bloomed forth in a Blaze of Color, when it came right down to brass buds! They are a real eyecatcher, when driving past our yard.
Finding the time to enjoy what Nature allows us, is always an ease for my over-worked soul. Hope you enjoy them too.

Summer Drives

Out for a summer drive, to explore nearby Erin Ontario, we came across this very peaceful scene. Meandering creeks and streams with trout and water striders, watercress and pond lilies fill the hills of Erin with these little jewel-like hidden treasures. My husband Bruce came upon this one recently during his work day, and thought I might appreciate the chance to come and see the water lilies and maybe take some pictures.
So off we went on a photo safari, nearly in our own back yard! We saw deer, wild orchids, leopard frogs, and lots of other Ontarians out enjoying a summer evening. I always have time for the simple things in Life, as they are the things longest remembered as our lives are filled with the detritus of day to day survival!
Taking photos, sharing memories, and being a cheap date all rolled into one peaceful evening! Does it get any better?

Summer Heat

Summer is in full flight now. The grass is turning brown from the sun and too little rain has fallen to feed the crops.
Fire bans are posted, with the vain hopes of preventing forest fires in cottage country. Heat alerts are common and smog is a problem in a lot of the urban areas now. The higher, aging, population often suffer terribly in the higher temperatures, from allergies and asthma related troubles. My own allergies have been at a peak this year, and I don't recall them ever being this bad.

Some of the local gardens are thriving, my own is doing all right with constant watering every second day. Watering doesn't take the place of a good, soaking rain. I hope we can have some good rains soon, preferably at night, without wind, lightning or any other natural excessive event. Tornados have already been occurring across Canada. Having been thru one already, I am in no hurry to ever experience another!
Still, I do enjoy the summer, the chance to be outside with my group of ladies, walking and laughing in the sunlight. I'll remember these times when the winter winds are howling and the full winter moons create such restlessness, that only a winter walk can release. I hope that the ladies feel the same! Bundled up against the elements, it will take all of my creativity to entice them to join me for a trudge thru the snows!

But for now, we listen to the birds, catch the sight of wildflowers dancing in the breezes, and bumblebees buzzing past our courtyard antics. My dogs enjoy lazing in the sun, waterbucket handy of course! My flowers are trying to inspire me by filling my home with color and fragrance. My knitting lies forgotten, as summer chores, outdoor cooking, and just enjoying the quiet evening filled with birdsong come first in Life.

And work, always work which takes up so much of my day to day, sees the advent of taking recovering folk for walks, for pointing out the roses along the way, to encourage the simple enjoyments of the summer season as it flits past, soon gone and mourned as winter treads heavily on our bodies and minds. To stop and smell the flowers, enjoy the sight of fledglings as they take flight, to listen to the cheery chirping of the goldfinches, and the peace of watching robins scavange for bugs on a quiet lawn...all are the inate joys of summer, and the stuff of memories on long winter nights.

Yes, I'm enjoying the summer, heat, drought, too many working hours and not enough days off to spend lazily on my deck with dozing dogs by my side....all part and parcel of living day to day in the short season of sunshine we Canadians love to see and hate to lose!
Hope you are all out making Summer memories, because Winter is chasing us down and that old seasonal clock is ticking relentlessly, and as we know, will not be denied!
(sigh)

More Wee Creations

Here are 2 more of the latest editions to be finished. They will go towards baby gifts which may be needed in the next few months. Added to a basket of baby wash, diaper wipes, a color coordinated sleeper, socks and a stuffed toy, makes an easy and colorful package for a new wee one. I may or may not come up with a matching blanket, cap or booties for any of these sweaters, depending on how the stash will last. The next project on the needles is a Broken Rib pattern blanket in blue, and after that will be something in yellow, and that will go with the Green set (Wally and the Wee Eskimo) and a pink Feather and Fan set already waiting delivery.

I think the Green set will be finding a new home next weekend. I've been experimenting with texture, making Tunisian Crochet dish cloths, from Handicrafter Cotton. Also in that same Tunisian stitch, an infant pullover in Red Heart Soft Baby, in cheery Easter Pinks, with soft brown teddy bear buttons. The Preemie vest and cap features a cable center detail, with seed stitch accents and soft ribbing, duck buttons for easy access and is also in Red Heart Soft Baby.
I also found some really cool shopping bags at No Frills, made from recycled plastic bottles, washable and recyclable. They'll save lots of plastic from going into land fill sites, and were only $.99 cents! I got some to keep in the car for shopping days, and some to use as yarn storage and even one to use as an everyday work tote. They have a wonderful "green" screenprint on the front and are Canadian made.
Stay tuned..you never know just what I'll dig up next!

Getting Back to Basics

"Why not channel your emotional and mental flexibility toward your own life rather than taking care of others? Time for me, after the hustle and bustle of the past 6 months Chaos. The life of a caregiver has not been easy this past year. Many "Superbugs" seemed to thrive, leaving devastation and depression in empty hearts as loved ones passed on. The Funeral business has been thriving as well, barely enough dignified time allowed before that casket has to be moved along to make room for the 3 or 4 that are awaiting turns in the spotlights. The World's Inhabitants seem all to be at each other's throats of late, chaos and discord abound, sniping, rudeness, irritability and major PMS seem more habits than anomaly.
My own company is not above periods of discord as well, my co-workers sniping and my boss frazzled and biting back. We are community support workers, actively attempting to soothe the spirits of the ill, and support the families of the dying. Not an easy task on a sunny day, but taken into consideration all of the wet dreary weather of the Fall and Winter, and so far this Spring, as well as the proliferation of bacteria, outbreaks of flu and Norwalk, deaths of babies, and increased irritability of medical staff...well, little wonder the support workers are all biting each other. We've dug to our roots to give to those we serve, and have little to nothing left to give to those who at times, deserve our best Compassion.

So, time to step back, regroup, get back to working part time and focus on restoring our own selves before the next big series of outbreaks and the culling of the "Herd" begins anew. Personally, I'm looking forward to Spring, my gardens, and having time with which to putter and sort out my own Nest, tend to my family, myself, my pets...while the World in general takes a deep breath and decides which way to fall apart next! Let the Snipers snipe, and the back-stabbers flail away...whilst I enjoy the sun, the smells of awakening Earth, the birdsong and my family from the safety of my modest Bungalow. Not exactly a "rise above" but more of a general decision to just not participate in Negativity.
So, to Cosmic Chaos...

BITE ME, BUCKY!!!

Spring is here, and very Welcome!

So here we are, getting ready for summer, planning gardens, playing with ideas of redecorating, and procrastinating on Spring Cleaning chores.
Men are washing cars, women are washing everything else, and pets are getting frisky with the increase in sunlight and the longer days. In the nursing home where I work, the energy level is higher, even if the expectations are not. The Superbugs for the most part are dwindling off now, except for the most extreme cases who linger in hospital. It certainly was a busy fall and winter for the health care providers. I don't think my company has ever been this busy! Lots of us "front-liners" are anticipating a short breather now until the pace picks up over vacation time.
And, of course, with Spring, arrives Tax Season. As day follows night...misery follows longer days for the Tax-Impaired members of our society. However, unlike our good Canadian Winters, Tax Season never lingers as long, even though it's bite may still be as sharp.
Spring for me, is the anticiaption of sunny days, gardening, color, and the scent of awakening earth. The first grass cutting, the after winter dog pile cleanup, the first shoots of flowers growing, and the long, quiet evenings on my porch as the sun sets in the distance.
I still have remnants of the 5-6ft of snow we had dumped on us, although each day exposes more green, and more mud, and more mosquito-breeding puddles. I can see the dog house again, the field beyond my back door is again visible and I look forward to that first day of using my clothesline to hang out freshly washed sheets.
So, however you view Spring, and whatever your favorite Spring habits, take some time out from your busy day-to-days to just enjoy that once again, Spring is with us. Take a walk on the grass and listen to the airbubbles popping in the ground as the spring water melts new life into the ground. Make mudpies! Listen to the birds, and smell the Earth as she awakens again.
Happy Spring to all.

Cold Ontario Morning

It was an Early To Rise Day today. I was fortunate to see this lovely sunrise as I raised the blinds in the living room to let the early sunlight stream in. A Sundog is always a sign of cold, so checking the thermometer as I went out, I saw it was -18.4C, and grabbing my camera, I went out to see if I could capture this natural phenomena. The dark triangle at the base of the tree is a dog house that stands 38 inches off the ground, but now is almost completely submerged in the waves of frosty white that were blowing thru the farm for the past few days.

Sometimes looking out over the fields, its like looking out on a cold icy ocean, the snowdrifts appear as moving waves and they shift and form, sifting across the frozen open spaces. The poll question on the CTV news referred to people having winter vacations and would they consider or avoid Mexico as a destination. Well, for me, I'd say forget Mexico, the smog, the poverty, overt opulence of the resorts, the crime wave against tourists (kinda like biting the hand that feeds them, huh?), the over-crowded and crime ridden markets...for me there's no place like the clean, open, air of home.

A Sundog is a sign of very cold weather, but its clean, its sunny, and every day that you wake up safe at home is a very good day! By all means, have your resort vacations, your ice-free

drinks on the beach, malaria vaccinations and hepatitis warnings...you can send me a post card, or tell me all about it when you get home!

Maybe I'll just go knit me another pair of Ruby Slippers while you're away...

Winter Games?

So, here we are, in full Winter mode, picking our way thru the mud daily during our usual comings and goings. Here on the farm its particularly depressing. There is no easy way of getting to the car from the house without picking up a few extra ounces of Mother Earth. I dread seeing this continue and long for some cold crisp snow to cover it all up- well at least some cold to make the mud stiff enough to walk on and not slog thru.

Looking at the last post, I see its some time since my last available interval online. I have not been home very much. The El Nino is being hard on the health situation in my area, lots of sick people requiring support. I have been slogging thru that mud several times a day. I love life in the country, the peace and the sound of birdsong, not traffic is great! But after all the rain and wet dampness we've had here, its a first for me to wish I lived in Town. I know its but a fleeting fancy but surely would be a lovely change from cleaning shoes all the time. I'd have made a crappy Pioneer woman. The Wild Frontier with its dust, mud and bugs would have done me in!

Anyway, today it is snowing, snowed enough last night to cover the muck and make the view here in my world a little fresher! I know its an open winter, but I still hope to see enough snow to make a seasonal change, not just 10 months of wet fall.

Looking forward to throwing some snowballs for my puppies...and soon!

Our Holiday Tree

Merry Christmas One and All...and a safe and happy shopping experience for those of whom do not celebrate the cultural holiday, but do reap the benefit of all the sales!
Every year we think our Christmas tree is the best one ever. This year, I do think we got it right, even scaling back and down-sizing as we did. This lovely 5 ft spruce even grew a little grander once covered in family heirloom decorations. And of course, one has to place a few decorative gifts beneath, to fill out the image and effect. Our dogs are so funny..constantly snooping, snuffling all the packages, laying beside the tree and tails thumping in anticipation each time we stir on the couch as we watched the Sound Of Music, and other seasonal programming on the Big Screen.
My shopping is completed, right down to the little Elvish joke gifts we always find the right recipient for- but that's another story! I have a little wrapping left to complete when the guys are at work, perhaps some shortbread to whip up, but for the most part, I can just sit and watch the lights on this year's tree twinkle, and the reflection in our Doberman's eyes as she wags, patiently awaiting her turn at unwrapping. The cats have snooped, discovering that once again, sap tastes awful and spruce needles between their toes are painful- giving the tree a wide berth, as one would give an alien invader! With an artificial tree, they become jungle cats, climbing into perches high above sleeping and unsuspecting dogs, waiting to pounce. With our real trees, they slink in shadows, sneaking silently, sniffing for danger and jumping airborne at every rustle and sigh of our sleeping guardian dogs. For the next 2 weeks or so they will be frustrated at the lack of birdwatching, as the tree took the place of the cat perches at the window. Ahhh well, they'll appreciate it all the more when its gone! The Heat-Seeking Beagle will just have to work a little harder to find the Beam between the shadows of the branches- provided we even get any sunshine to send her a Beam. A large Granny Square now decorates her sleeping ball, soft and cosy, collecting all her dispensed hair as she sighs and snuggles into it. A cosy Beagle, sleeping beneath the stockings hung and waiting, and a snoring Doberman wags and twitches an ear along side the glittering tree..all is well in my world today.
Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and Happy New Year to all.

December Snow

December snows are great! All that muddy crap gets covered up, no more squishy grass to leave big deep boot prints in, just clean and fresh and white and sparkly! Watching the birds at my feeders reminds me of hyper children at recess! They scurry and flutter around, chasing each other away from that coveted big sunflower seed on the ground, or that freshly fallen peanut dropped by a screaming jay. The Mourning Doves huddle in red-footed clumps under the Clematis by the Nijer feeder, picking at the leftovers dropped by the flock of squabbling Goldfinches. Our two inside cats, Mike and Missylou perch on the cat platform at the window, watching all the activity with great anticipation, taking the odd leap at the glass only to shake their heads in pain at the contact with the hard, cold glass. Yet, they know that window is there and still try to leap through it! Its like a big screen Cat TV. Hours of activity keeping them awake during daylight, and letting us sleep at night. No midnight mat surfing these days! They don't have the strength left after a day of bird watching!

They even watch the slowly drifting flakes, as squalls move thru, dropping more fluffiness on our yard. The footprints of ground-searching birds pack down the snow at the base of the tree and feeder pole. The hopping Chickadees peek curious eyes into the living room from the safety of the outside of the glass, mere millimeters away from certain death by Cat Attack- goading yet another leap into glassy pain! So, December snow is great, from the inside looking out, and even enjoyable as it squeaks under booted feet, as I go out to check the mailbox for another delivery of Christmas cards.

The dogs chase snowballs, and run along with snuffles buried in the fluffy stuff, sneezing great steamy, flakey, clouds when they come up to the surface! Watching these antics takes my mind off scraping the ice particles off the car windows, shovelling the mound of white off the deck and that the wind is cold blowing down my neck cause I forgot to put my newly knitted scarf on!

Time to brave the elements cause the Woodpecker has a new trick- he pecks at the window when he wants another suet block! Then he sits on the pole as I put it into the suet cage, and even sometimes on my sleeve as I work, filling the feeders as Cheepers excitedly serenade from the treetop. The Doves lumber along up on the roof, the Chickadee chirps from the Christmas lights as he waits his turn, the Sparrows flutter and chase each other thru the Lilac bush as they play "who gets to go first" games.

Yep, December Snow is Great! This one is smaller than the lilac one, and I was able to write the pattern down for those who'd like to try it. It is made in Softee Baby with Baby Eyelash trim, crocheted to make up fast and hold its shape when washed, the seams are joined with sc for durability. This will fit 3 months size, or a average teddy bear when outgrown!

Wee Poncho Pattern

3-6 month size, Baby Softee, 50 grm ball, Aero hook 4.5mm, 1/2 ball Baby Eyelash

First peice: rectangle, 5 inches wide, by 15 inches long

Chain 21 sts.

Shell pattern: 2 DC in 4th stitch from hook, chain 1, 2DC in same st as previous 2DC. Skip 3 sts, 2DC in 4th st, chain 1, 2DC in same st; repeat to end of row, chain 3, turn.

Repeat pattern each row until peice measures 15 inches or 25 rows. End off and weave in end.

Second Peice:

Chain 21 sts.

Work in shell pattern as above for 22 rows. Making the second peice slightly shorter than the first makes less gap at neck opening for a better fit on tiny shoulders.

End off and weave in end of yarn.

Joining:

with end of peice 1, right sides facing, join to side of peice 2, working from corner inwards, 5 inches, to form an "L" shape.

Join with sc seam, make seam as flat as possible for comfort.

Join end of peice 2 to side of peice one, as above in reverse, so that when laid flat, creates a poncho shape, triangular opening at neck and points of triangle at hem end matched front and back. Like a "V" shape.

If you are unsure where to join the second seam, lay out peice flat until shape is correct and place markers for seam ending.

Trim edges:

With wrong side facing, right side inside, join eyelash yarn or desired trimming yarn, to shoulder edge of neck opening, work 2 rounds of sc even, end off and weave in ends.

Join trimming yarn to hem edge, make 2 rows of sc, end off and weave in ends. Turn poncho to right side facing out.

Cap

With Softee Baby, 4.5mm hook

Chain 5, join with slp st to form ring. Sc into ring, 10 sc in ring, join each round with slp st.

R2. 2sc in each sc of previous row.

R3 Work 1 row of sc even

R4 repeat R2

R5 repeat R3

Work even, 1 sc in each st of previous row until peice measures 3.5 inches long and 4.5 to 5 inches wide. If you desire to make it wider, increase by making 2 sc in previous 1 sc evenly spaced across the row. (about every 6th st) as needed.

Join eyelash yarn, work inside out, working towards the right side so that yarn is fluffiest on the right side- 2 rows of sc even for trim. End off and weave in ends.

Trim with crochet flower of your choice, applique, buttons or leave plain.

Make 2 chains of about 10 inches long, join to sides of cap with front facing for chin ties. Weave in all ends.

For 12-18 month Poncho, chain 41 sts. For larger sizes, measure length of arm from top of where neck joins shoulder, or where you want neck opening to fit, in inches, number of inches= number of crochet shells in width, less 1.( width of panel then can be adapted for stitch pattern)

This way, the pattern can be adapted for any size, the panels made in any stitch you desire, knit or crochet.

Happy Stitching!

Full Contact Grocery Shopping

Today was a sunny, bright, fall day. The flies were buzzing sleepily in the windows, the calves were practicing Pilates in the barn yard, and the Beagle was migrating in the sunbeam on the living room carpet as it slowly crossed the room. With the dismal outlook of foul weather for tomorrow, I took the opportunity to get outside and go grocery shopping, run some errands and just get some air! Little did I know, that while searching thru a bin of cake mixes for my favorite kind, I was holding a desperately busy woman back from completing her own errands. Apparently she was getting very impatient, because she rammed her buggy into the backs of my legs. Then, when I looked up in surprise expecting an apology, she backed up a bit and did it again. At this, expecting imminent injury to my person, I moved out of her obviously- more- important- self- than- me, way. As she passed me, a thunderous look on her face, I softly moo'd. She turned and I looked her square in the eyes and said "Its a sunny day, get a grip.". A huff of disgust and she was on her way once more.

Would that she could walk a mile in my shoes as I work with my palliative patients. They would love the opportunity to go outside, smell the fall air, feel the sun on pale, thin, faces, and have the opportunity to forget how much they hurt and long for peace.

I don't pity the dying, however much I care for them and the desperate fight they wage. I pity the ignorant, like this self- important cow. She will feel pain, know heartbreak, and peace will elude her all of her days until she realizes that time is the only thing we all do have. All the rest, well, its all borrowed and fleeting, til we wonder why we ever cared anyway how long we had to wait as someone made a choice.

And, as I have found, some cows just never "get it".

Today I'll go to work with a new story to share with my patient, of a sunny day and a raining soul.

Christmas in Hospital

Our local hospital is all decorated up for Christmas, perhaps a tad too soon as it was all done prior to Veteran's Day. Which sort of over-shadowed the special services in the chapel for the veterans curently residing on its units. However, decorated it is! Garlands hung heavy with colored satin balls, angels in blue glitter, trees in alcoves with bright packages underneath, in front of the stained glass scenes of guardian angels, spreading mercy to the sick and injured. The gift shop is alive with red velvet, sleighs, bells, snow people and brightly sweatered bears. Very eye catching displays indeed greet visitors as they enter the lobby. Patches of Positivity to distract the visual brain as people begin and end their lives in quiet rooms, off polished halls. The click of approaching footsteps, herald more visitation from family, rustling cotton announces nurses making rounds and deep voices of Doctors giving detailed instructions of care, most of which passes by the door by which I wait. Distant rumbles of air Ambulances passing overhead, trucks passing by on the highway outside the window, and sparrows fighting over the last dregs of seed in the feeder in the garden, add to the quiet air, the sense of waiting, always waiting for the next stage of Life to begin.
Hospitals are busy places, with sadness and joy filling each corner, but always someone tries to brighten the loads we bear with decoration to cheer and reassure that Life still happens despite that which happens behind closed doors, in quiet rooms, off polished halls.

A close-up View...

Here's a close-up of the Poncho and Cap with flower detail. Having completed the afghan, I decided that since I still had yarn left, I could make something to go with it, and decided on the poncho and hat combination. Adding a crochet flower for style appeal, some fluffy eyelash edges, and making it all in a washable yarn should work well for Mom. The poncho is a great way to dress up a sleeper for a quick grocery stop, or just to go out for a drive- no sleeves to fuss with, and when outgrown, can dress up a favorite Bear. Crochetted from Paton's Softee Baby in Soft Lilac, it was quick to work up, even the flower. Now we're ready for Baby Faith to arrive, hope big brother Austin will be!

Idea Shopping

Off to the Big Smoke for some creative idea shopping. I've attended this event almost each year both at the fall and spring versions. Like most knitters, I prefer the Fall show, with its extended knitting and crochet exhibits.
Not a bad way to spend a day off, might get in a little mall shopping too, if time permits! Maybe even some Christmas shopping!
If you've never been to this show, I can tell you, you're missing out on a lively, colorful, and educational exhibit from some of the leading crafting artists in North America. I don't like being in crowded places, especially in Flu Season, but for this, I'll brave the elements!
Have a great weekend...

Seasons are Changing

When I got up just the other day, I thought someone had played a very cruel trick on me. Here we were, the 12th of October, and someone had attacked my yard with a giant can of Redi-Whip.
How mean.
But, as the day wore on the day got bleaker, wetter, colder, more dreary, more snowy, I started seeing images from Fort Erie and Buffalo, which cheered me up immensly! Compared to those poor folks, our piddly 8cm of snow was nothing! Yes, true, there were cars in the ditch and local accidents, sanders out on the main roads and those with Halloween Pumpkins would soon find orange slime on porches in great, greasy pools. Watching the snow blow past the windows and hearing the clicking of ice pellets hit the deck, made me appreciate the warmth of the wood pellet stove, and made my beagle appreciate glimpses of brilliant sunshine which warmed the carpet under her fat self.
Periodically she'd raise her head and glare accusingly at me as if to say "Turn that Sunbeam back on, You!", then shift and wiggle and finally find the last vestiges of heat remaining in the carpet, settling with a heartfelt sigh into Snoredom once more. Heat-seeking Beagles are entertainment on such dreary days as these. I never know where exactly I'll find her, but you can bet its the warmest spot in the house at any particular time! I've even caught her snuggling up to the heating vent! Although, typically Princess-like, she prefers the comfort of layers of foam and blankets to bare floor.
Gone now are the warm days of Fall, and we have wintery times ahead. I've stocked up on bird seed, suet blocks and have my shovels at the ready! Looking forward to seeing what the season brings...but not quite ready to hang the sleigh bells out just yet!
ON the bright side...the snow had drastically reduced the allergen-causeing mold populations around home! Looking forward to breathing better real soon!

Relentless Time

The pile of fuzzy Christmas gifts is growing slowly, but growing indeed! Slow progress as Arthritis cripples my hands with more pain this Fall than they have experienced before. Winds howling and rain pattering against the windows are a constant reminder that Christmas is relentlessly approaching, despite the lingering stiffness as my hands play Beat the Clock, creating gifts as quickly and efficiently as they can. Sometimes I wish my needles had the lightning speed of Grandma Penny who is able to out-knit about anyone else I know! Soon I will have to seek out professional treatment options for these poor aging hands of mine. But as long as they can still hold the needles, knitting will continue to happen! Soon, scarves will turn to mittens for charity, mittens to doilies, doilies to...well, maybe finishing some of the WIPs ongoing, so I can find space for more yarn shopping!
Hope Springs Eternal, after all...

Braving the Winds

The winds of seasonal change blow thru here a lot it seems, storms and rain, leaves scattering about, and the corn rattling dry leaves scaring the birds away. Each year, my Scarecrow stands with his corn, braving wind and rain and snow, until the season of change, has changed to winter. Every so often a small sunbeam finds him under the spreading boughs of the maple trees he guards, bringing a slight smile, and out peeks the crows who hide in the folds of his costume. A small face peeks, a tiny hand waves as the child passes by safely encased in the bright yellow school bus, waving to the sentry of Fall.
Soon the green will be white, and the leaves will mulch the sleeping grass until spring again arrives.

Christmas Warmth

Christmas knitting is in full swing, with scarves and other swingin ideas! Here are a couple of examples, one in Boa, one in Frenzy mill ends- a real pain as there are so many joins. I think that must be the worst bag of mill ends I have ever bought, all short peices, and in reality I trashed almost half of the bag as unuseable. However, the thick and fluffy blue boa result is irrisistable to the touch! Making little gifts for co-workers and sisters-in-law who do not normally exchange gifts. Next year, perhaps I'll be more organized and make some larger things. I'm also working on a cardigan for me, yes, me! I NEVER make anything for me, so its a real novelty! Hope to actually get it finished some day as well!

Watching movies in the rain, and knitting, knitting, knitting...then off to work I go!

Labour Day Vacation

This past weekend, my DH Bruce and I went to visit Gananoque, Ontario. We took a leisurely 5 hr boat cruise of the 1000 Islands in the St Lawrence River, aboard the Gananoque Boat Lines. We had a 2 hour stop to visit Boldt Castle on Heart Island, New York. Although "Intrigued by the Legend", as told by the tour guides, I bought a historical, anecdotal accounting of the area at the time of the construction of the Castle, and am enjoying reading a more complete accounting of its history. Still, despite whatever motives lay behind the building of this enormous Castle, its well worth the visit, for visual as well as daydreaming quality! Having only a 3 day weekend to explore and count as our official summer vacation, we did make the most of it, wandering to and fro as our free will dictated! Never more than 4 hours from home, we visited a flea market, did some shopping, had a lovely stay at the Gananoque Inn, and just plain spent time together. Even the rainy weather caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto, didn't get in our way. They will be delivered to an Orphanage as Penny's daughter travels to pick up her new little person, as part of the adoption process. Several of my online knitting buddies are also busily creating booties, especially Grandma Penny! Its good to do good for little people, and particularly the unwanted little people yet to find caring families. Hopefully the Authorities running the Orphanage will know that even if we are not involved in actually adopting- although personally I would LOVE to- that we who are contributing these small gifts do care about the well being of these little people, even from such a great distance that geography has caused. Lots of love, and the work of many caring hands is sure to make many tiny feet more cosy this coming winter.
The best part of being creative, is sharing with those who need.
At least, that's my opinion!

As you can see, Stash Building was our Order of the Day! We covered 343.7kms in search of bargains, on crafting supplies, gaining inspiration with each stop.
At Mary Maxim in Paris Ontario, we enjoyed a huge tent sale event, gathering up Christmas gifts and getting some awesome deals, making the long trek worth our while. At Cambridge Ontario, we enjoyed thick burgers at a local 50's Diner, then on to Len's Mills, to scope out bargains and enjoy clearance sales there too!
A leisurely trip thru Ontario's Breadbasket, rolling land and sprawling farms led us to Listowel, to a factory outlet not to be missed by any serious fibre artiste. Stocking huge amounts and varieties of Bernat yarns, of all textures and colors, throngs of crafters left the tents beaming, and hauling away huge garbage bags full of deals which left them panting with exertion. The fellowship, visiting, awesome lunch, and satisfaction of the hunt well rewarded, left us all tired, happy, and bursting with craft ideas for gifts, charities, and children. Scenic farmscapes, Mennonite buggies, a pair of Amish visitors in bright mauve bonnets, and the freedom of being chore-less for even 1 day, was well worth the time and effort spent in the my little car.
Now, all we have to do, is create!

Summer's End in Sight

The air has changed. Harvest is in full swing as all of my neibours gather in the crops. My husband has been going night and day, working at his full time job, and then jumping in the big rig transporting wheat to the various loading dock facilities. Pretty soon all the fields will be bare awaiting winter's snowy blankets. Apple trees around the roadsides are laden, our own ash trees are covered in berry clusters drawing flocks of noisy starlings.
My friends in the knitting circles are busily planning and designing Christmas gifts and menus. I have been working a lot, covering for vacationing staff, and providing respite care for tired family members who need a recharge now and then. I take my knitting along for quiet times and my own breaks, and my patients enjoy the quiet, watching my projects grow larger, as it brings back memories of past knitters to discuss and share.
The chickadees are constant visitors now, as some of the larger birds are slowly moving southwards, following the changes in the landscape as food sources change as fall and winter approach. The hummingbird still visits the feeder, but will be leaving soon for warmer climates, til next spring when they again buzz past my windows.
And everywhere, gardens are in full glory, as we enjoy the new potato crop and crisp beans, an everyday table addition of late summer.
So we all better get out and savor late summer as it wanes, as soon enough the weather will be cool, then cold and blustery in the grip of Old Man Winter!

Today our son James will be celebrating his 21st birthday with his buddies and his sweetheart Katie. Last summer they had a BBQ and jam session, several tents were erected for overnight guests as we never allow drinking and driving. This year, the crowd will be smaller, the band louder, and the tents will appear as the evening wanes. A bonfire, some beer, and a lot of good friends being friends on a lovely long weekend evenings! His gang is older, busier, working hard to pay their own bills, different cars, different hair, a couple are in the military now! But they still find time to get together, this gang of friends, some of whom have been around since the early school days. Jamie has worked very hard this year, earned 2 more trades certificates, and a promotion at his job. He helps out here at home, and helps all of his friends whenever he's needed! I guess I can tolerate a loud evening of head banger punk jam session!
Happy 21st James!

Christmas is coming!

Christmas knitting is in full swing here with me...begining with this shoulderette, or shrug. The snow and ice will be here soon enough, that's for sure!
There will be another wedding in the family soon, as cousin Robin and her chosen, Mike, will soon have their big day. Lately I have been doing home care supportive work, helping maintain our clients in their own homes for a long as possible. This particular place I visit, is a world of history, agriculture, vintage gardens, color, and even ghosts that DO go bump in the night! The other day I was opening windows, leting in the smell of freshly baled hay, which had sparked all sorts of discussions with my client! Lots of memories of haying back in the horse drawn days, when cars were around but still ignored, and tractors were more work than they were worth to buy. I happened to spy these hollyhocks waving in the summer breeze right by his front door. Knowing them to be his favorite flower, I grabbed my camera and snapped a few, so that he can see, even though we can't get his wheelchair over the rough ground for him to see them in person. See that they are still cheery and beautiful and noticed even by cars passing along the busy highway right along his property. There is always something to see at this farm, and I try to keep my camera ready each visit, in case a special moment should come along. Keeping Life alive, for those who would otherwise so easily slip away unnoticed from it, is something I try to do each day. Its not much effort, and always a pleasure shared.

Summer Days and Birthdays

Its Summer, and for us, Summer is lazy days under shade trees, birthdays and this year it also means weddings in the family! With our Neice's wedding accomplished, and 2 cousins also getting married, there are always family functions to attend. Last Sunday was Father's Day and also my DH's birthday. We celebrated by sitting under a shady maple, me with my knitting and he with his beer, enjoying the birdsong and the company of our snoozing dogs. Sometimes just taking a little time to do nothing can recharge your soul for the hectic days when there are too many chores and not enough hours in the day. Its taken my DH 40+ years to "get" that, but he's trying! So, we extend our wish for a lazy day or two when the sun is shining, the breeze tickles you and the birdsong lulls your senses into relaxation, to you and yours!

Enjoy the summer, the peace, the warmth of family, and the sheer enjoyment of being part of Life.

Sunshine and Flowers

Sunshine, Flowers... and birdsong,

All the things that brighten the day to day for most people. My yard here on the farm is alive with birds, and soon will be filled with color as the flower beds fill up. Life is going to happen, so why not appreciate the small aspects while you can? Its mostly crocheted, the blanket is crib sized, the sweater is knit, 3-6 month sized as are the booties, which are knitted with a crocheted shell border, all done in Baby Coordinates, 100% acrylic and machine washable. A little Baby Eyelash trim, sets it off nicely. Wally the Whale just seems to fit along with this set!

Thanks to Knit It! Magazine for the easy to adapt pattern. The spring 2006 issue has loads of easy patterns, giving lots of inspiration for one-of-a-kind crafters.

Now that I'm all prepared for the Next Arrival, I can get on with finishing my WIP's, a poncho for my FDIL, a doily for my oak table, and a summer crocheted vest for me, are in the plans. This forms the foundation row for a side panel in stocking st, with a simple center cable design.
Second row, purl 25, knit 2, purl 6, knit 2, purl 25, for every other row until completed.
Repeat first 2 rows twice.
Next row, knit 25, purl 2, slip 3 sts onto cable needle and pull to front of work, knit next 3 sts, then knit the sts on cable needle.
Repeat row 2.
Repeat pattern until peice measures 12" from foundation row. (About 13 " wide)
Make second panel matching the first.
Gusset: cast on 16 sts.
First row, Knit 3, purl 2, knit 6, Purl 2, knit 3. Work in simple cable pattern, as above center cable pattern, until peice measures same as width of side panels. About 13"
Sew gusset into place, matching right sides of side panels at foundation rows with long sides of gusset, cable sides will face out when complete.

Pick up and crochet 2 rows of single crochet along long sides of panel, plus gusset, and then second panel, on both sides where bag will join.

Sew sides together, making sure that seam is firm.

Pick up and crochet 2 rows of single crochet around top of bag opening to firm up the edges.

Make second gusset panel, same as first pattern, making peice 24" long. This forms the handle for the bag. Sew into place, cable facing out, at sides of bag. Center the center of the cable to the crocheted side seams, and sew together on inside and on outside, for added durability. Weave in all ends.

For Variety, make cable from second color, gusset and handle from second color.
